MWC 2023: Satellite Communications Will be Launched Soon

March22, 2023

After three years of being particularly deserted due to the impact of the epidemic, the 2023 World Mobile Communications Conference-Barcelona (MWC 2023 for short) announced that it will be held in Barcelona, Spain from February 27 to March 2. As the largest global exhibition in the communications industry and one of the most influential exhibitions in the field of mobile communications in the world, MWC has always been a gathering place for new product releases by various smartphone hardware and software manufacturers, as well as a showcase for operators and experts in the communications field. The "outpost" of the latest products, technologies, and development trends can make people deeply feel the momentum of the overall recovery of the global technology industry.

Qualcomm: Satellite communications are coming soon

Following the launch of Snapdragon Satellite Communications in January this year, Qualcomm officially announced cooperation with several Android OEMs at MWC 2023, aiming to apply Snapdragon Satellite to future smartphones, Motorola, Nothing, Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO and Honor, etc. Several vendors will be among the first to be supported in the program.

According to Qualcomm's previous statement, Snapdragon Satellite is the world's first satellite-based solution to provide two-way message communication for flagship smartphones, and can provide global connectivity using mobile message services that reach all parts of the world. Unlike MediaTek, Qualcomm’s technology will be the first to be applied to terminals equipped with the second-generation Snapdragon 8 flagship mobile platform. As for whether it can be popularized, we need to look forward to subsequent development.

The trend of MWC this year is still obvious. First of all, satellite communication technology has become the focus of communication manufacturers. After Huawei and Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek have launched satellite communication technology with their own characteristics. They clearly define satellite communication as a supplement to the ground communication system. Provide network services to users in places such as the sea and remote areas.

This change in positioning marks that the development of WeChat communication has officially entered a new stage, making up for the shortcomings of traditional ground communication systems through satellite communication, and also bringing the hypothesis of "global interconnection" into reality step by step. Although the current mainstream applications are still limited to short messages with a limited number of characters, a new track of "smartphone + satellite communication" has been rising.
